The worst thing about being behind the wheel while driving to Ouray, Colorado, is scenery like this flies by while you try to keep the vehicle from flying off the guardrail-less highway.
I spent some time backpacking in these very same San Juan mountains a while back. Crossing the Continental Divide on foot was a high point in my life. No pun intended.
There is a narrow gauge railway running parallel to 550 from Durango to Silverton, which stops to drop off and pickup hikers. As luck would have it, our train experienced technical difficulties on the way back - the cars got separated (!!) - leaving us stranded for several hours. But after spending over a week in the back country, there was nary a complaint from our party.
